The region covers Northern, Luapula, Copperbelt and North Western Provinces and some parts of Serenje and Mkushi. The region is part of the degraded Central African plateau with altitudes ranging from 1100 to 1700 metres above sea level, except for the Luapula Valley with land below 1000 metres above sea level.
The mean annual rainfall in the region exceeds 1000mm. The length of the growing season varies from 120 days to 150 days. Local variations in amount and distribution are expected within the region. Although rainfall is more than adequate, the production of crops may be limited by the fewer number of sunshine hours.
