|Wheat is the leading cereal crop in the world. Although it is not a traditional staple food in Zambia the convenience of bread and other wheat products as fast foods, especially in urban areas, has increased its popularity making it one of the most important cereals in the country, second only to maize. About two thirds of the wheat consumed in Zambia is produced locally and mostly under irrigation during the dry season. A small but increasing proportion of domestic wheat production is rainfed.
Barley is produced in the dry season under irrigation. It is mainly used for production of malt for beer production but is also a valuable livestock feed.
